Image of the month on the British Magazine ImagineFX #72

On the original H.G Wells novel "The time Machine" the time traveller goes to the far future, where he encounters that humanity has evolved into two different strains: the gentle, surface dwelling Eloi and the brutish, underground carnivores called the Morlocks, who have knowledge of technology. In the course of his adventures , the time traveller has his machine stolen for a brief period of time by the Morlocks.
This image is based on the idea that the Morlocks, being technology wise, somehow reverse-engineered the time machine and made their own versions of it, in order to hunt in other times, raiders instead of explorers. One of these machines was shipwrecked in the past, and is part now of an archaeological dig , featured in an article on the Unprovable Geographic magazine....
I had lots of fun working on this image, even if it requires a long explanation.

Now, this is something we are really happy to share here! A digital painting by Axel Bernal, member of Munmaus, was selected as Image of the Month in the british magazine ImagineFX.

This magazine has a world wide audience of people dedicated to fantasy art made by digital media, and has an amazing wealth of tutorials and tips on traditional art, digital programs, and most related subjects.
It also has a strong internet presence, with a community of painters from all over the world sharing tips, info and learning from each other in the challenges section.

Pinturas digitales publicadas en ImagineFX

Tres de mis pinturas digitales están en la sección FXposé del dvd de la revista ImagineFX. Esta es una revista dedicada al arte fantástico realizado por medios digitales, o utilizar programas digitales para lograr acabados de pintura tradicional.

Hasta hace 4 años yo veía con escepticismo las ilustraciones hechas mediante programas de computadora. Para ser franco, me parecían un poco frías y estériles, con un aire estático que evitaba cualquier conexión emocional. Por contraste, las ilustraciones pintadas me parecían vivas y vibrantes, llenas de pasión y sabor… Me llevé una gran sorpresa al descubrir que la mayoría de esas ilustraciones “pintadas” habían sido realizadas mediante programas de computadora, usando sus capacidades como otra herramienta del cajón de pinturas. Un libro que fue de gran ayuda para realizar el salto de tradicional a digital fue Digital Fantasy Painting Workshop, recopilado por Martin McKenna. El libro junta varios tutoriales en diversos estilos para lograr imágenes fantásticas usando varios programas, principalmente Painter y Photoshop. Se los recomiendo ampliamente, especialmente la versión en inglés (mismo contenido pero a la mitad de precio que la traducción)

Para cualquiera interesado en este tipo de pintura, las galerías online de www.deviantart.com o la página de la revista www.imaginefx.com tienen muestras excelentes. Esta ultima también tiene tutoriales gratis para descargar.

Digital paintings published in ImagineFX
Three of my digital paintings are in the FXposé section of the ImagineFX magazine dvd. This is a magazine devoted to fantasy art by digital media, or the use of digital programs to achieve traditional looking paintings.
Until 4 years ago I looked skeptically at the illustrations made by computer programs. To be honest, theyseemed a little cold and sterile, with a static air avoiding any emotional connection. By contrast, painted artwork seemed alive and vibrant, full of passion and feeling... I was a big surprise to discover that most of these "painted" pictures had been made using computer programs, using their possibilities as another tool in the painter´s toolbox. A book that was of great help to make the leap from traditional to digital was Digital Fantasy Painting Workshop, compiled by Martin McKenna. The book brings together several tutorials in different styles to achieve stunning images using various programs, mainly Painter and Photoshop. I recommend it highly, especially the English version (same content but at half the price of the translation).
For anyone interested in this type of painting, galleries found at www.deviantart.com or the magazine page www.imaginefx.com are excellent examples. The latter also has free downloadable tutorials.

Otro de los intereses de munmaus es la creacion de conceptos para personajes y ambientes. Para ésto utilizamos técnicas de pintura digital, lo que nos permite explorar la union de técnicas tradicionales de pintura con las posibilidades y herramientas de la computadora.

Another munmaus interest is the creation of concepts for characters and environments. For this we use digital painting , which allows us to explore the union of traditional painting techniques with the possibilities and tools of the computer.

Next papercraft proyect

This is one of the preliminary sketches for our next free papercraft model... the Addams Family House. The main problem is that the original house was a matte painting from the second floor upwards, so we had to design the whole posterior view.

Este es uno de los bocetos preliminares para nuestro próximo modelo de papercraft... la Casa de la Familia Addams.
El problema principal es que el edificio original era una pintura matte del segundo piso hacia arriba, así que tuvimos que diseñar la vista posterior del conjunto.

para los que no lo sepan aún, papercraft o paperkraft es el nombre que se le está dando a los trabajos realizados en papel, principalmente modelos o instalaciones que no caben en las divisiones tradicionales tales como origami o pop-up.

De niño me gustaba armar modelos de papel. Normalmente los vendían en ferias culturales, o en librerias con una buena sección para niños.
Sólo puedo suponer que algún momento algún gris burócrata trabajando en el departamento de ventas de una editorial se le ocurrió decir que a los niños actuales no les interesaba ninguna actividad que requiriera más de 15 minutos de atención continua, y probablemente lo comentó en el café con su panda de burocratas grises de otras editoriales. Y de esta forma, sin una decisión consciente, se dejaron de publicar libros de modelos para armar... al parecer esta idea se propagó a los fabricantes de juguetes y juegos de mesa, pero eso será materia de otro post.
Entonces comenzó una larga sequia de modelos... hasta que, mediante la internet, se juntaron varios aficionados a ellos y se dieron cuenta de que con la computadora y la impresora en casa, ya no tenemos que depender del humor de ese mítico burocrata gris. Ahora uno puede ser el impresor de sus propios modelos.
Algunas compañias vieron oportunidades en este nuevo campo, tales como Cannon, Epson y prácticamente cada compañia japonesa. Mantienen sitios donde uno puede descargar modelos gratis para armar, de diversas dificultades y temas.
También surgió una comunidad internacional de papeleros, compartiendo modelos y, lo que es más importante, generando modelos propios cuando el modelo deseado no existe todavía.
Este trend de papercraft está apareciendo ahora en medios masivos, en comerciales, promocionales, publicidad, cortometrajes de animación y videos musicales. Incluso aparece como tema de shows de moda, como la pasarela de modas de Kenzo el año pasado.
La contribución de Munmaus a este movimiento, aparte del diseño de Bolo, es un modelo para armar del anime Ghost in the Shell.

for those who do not know yet, paperkraft is the name that is being given to works on paper, mainly models or installation art that do not fit the traditional divisions such as origami and pop-up.

As a kid I liked to build paper models . Normally they were sold at cultural fairs or in bookstores that had a good section for kids.
I can only assume that one time a gray bureaucrat working in the sales department of a publishing house came up to say that today's kids were not interested in any activity that requires more than 15 minutes of continuous attention, and probably said it out loud sharing coffee with his gang of other publishing gray bureaucrats... And so, without a conscious decision, all publishing houses stopped publishing books on papercrafts and model kits ... apparently this idea spread to the manufacturers of toys and games, but that will be the matter of another post.
Then began a long drought of models ... until, through the Internet, several fans gathered and realized that with the computer and printer at home, we no longer have to depend on the mood of that mythical gray bureaucrat. Now you can be the printer of your own models.
Some companies saw opportunities in this new field, such as Cannon, Epson and virtually every company in Japan. They maintain sites where you can download for free paper models of various difficulties and themes.
Also, an international community of papermakers grew up, sharing models and, more importantly, generating their own models when the model you want does not exist yet.
This trend of papercraft is now appearing in mass media, commercials, promotional, advertising, animated shorts and music videos. It even appears as a topic of fashion shows, such as the Kenzo fashion catwalk last year.
Munmaus's contribution to this movement, apart from the design of Bolo, is a model for assembly of the anime Ghost in the Shell.

Este es BOLO, un robot articulado de papel que diseñamos para el libro "Build your own Paper Robots" compilado por Julius Perdana y Josh Buczynski. El libro se puede conseguir en dos versiones, edición inglesa e internacional, lo único que cambia es el diseño de la portada. El libro incluye un cd con los patrones para imprimir los modelos, así como versiones en blanco de los mismos para que uno los pueda pintar a su gusto... por cierto, BOLO hace sonidos al mover las articulaciones!!!

This is BOLO, an articulated paper robot that we designed for the book "Buid your own Paper Robots", compiled by Julius Perdana and Josh Buczynski. The book is available in two versions, the British edition by Ilex Press and a international edition by St. Martin´s Press, the only difference is the cover. The book comes witha cd with the patterns to print out and assemble, as well as white versions to customize and paint at will... By the way, BOLO makes sounds when you move the joints!!!

¡Hola! bienvenidos al blog de munmaus, una asociación de diseñadores y creativos con un sueño común; la creación y diseño de objetos divertidos, que provoquen emociones en la persona que los viva.

Queremos hacer objetos conservables en lugar de consumibles, la clase de objetos que te saquen de lo cotidiano y te pongan a soñar. Objetos con narrativa, con discurso, con ideas que se salen del cajón de lo ordinario… objetos que te provoquen una sonrisa o un pensamiento. Creemos que el diseño es el camino para lograrlo.
